چکیده

Bathtub shape is one of the most important behaviors of the hazard rate function that is quite common in lifetime data analysis. Such shapes are actually the combination of three different shapes and, as such, there have been several proposals to model such behavior. One such proposal is to combine at most three different distributions, often the Weibull or some similar model, separately for decreasing, constant, and increasing shapes of the hazard rate. Sometimes combination of two different models may also result in the required bathtub shape. The other proposal includes generalizing or modifying the two-parameter distribution by adding an extra parameter into it. It is often seen that the first proposal is quite cumbersome whereas the second fails to capture some important aspects of the data. The present work considers two recent generalizations/modifications of the two-parameter Weibull model, namely the Weibull extension and the modified Weibull models, and proposes mixing the two families separately with the three-parameter Weibull distribution in order to see if the mixing results in some real benefit though at the cost of too many parameters. The paper finally considers the complete Bayes analysis of the proposed models using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation and compares them with both Weibull extension and the modified Weibull models in a Bayesian framework. It is observed that the mixture models offer drastic improvement over the individual models not only in terms of hazard rate but also in terms of overall performance. The results are illustrated with the help of a real data based example. AMS (2000) subject classification. Primary 62F15; Secondary 62N03, 62N05.

Modeling heterogeneity for bivariate survival data by shared gamma frailty regression model

In the analysis of survival data with parametric models, it is well known that the Weibull model is not suitable for modeling survival data where the hazard rate is non-monotonic. For such cases, where hazard rates are bathtub-shaped or unimodal (or hump-shaped), log-logistic, lognormal, Birnbaun-Saunders, and inverse Gaussian models are used for the computational simplicity and popularity amon...

A modified Weibull distribution

A new lifetime distribution capable of modeling a bathtub-shaped hazard-rate function is proposed. The proposed model is derived as a limiting case of the Beta Integrated Model and has both the Weibull distribution and Type I extreme value distribution as special cases. The model can be considered as another useful 3-parameter generalization of the Weibull distribution. An advantage of the mode...

The discrete additive Weibull distribution: A bathtub-shaped hazard for discontinuous failure data

Although failure data are usually treated as being continuous, they may have been collected in a discrete manner, or in fact be discrete in nature. Reliability models with bathtub-shaped hazard rate are fundamental to the concepts of burn-in and maintenance, but how well do they incorporate discrete data? We explore discrete versions of the additive Weibull distribution, which has the twin virt...

The New Extended Flexible Weibull Distribution and Its Applications

The present article considers a new function to propose a new lifetime distribution. The new distribution is introduced by mixing up a linear system of the two logarithms of cumulative hazard functions. The proposed model is called new extended flexible Weibull distribution and is able to model lifetime with bathtub shaped failure rates and offers greater flexibility. Therefore, it can be quite...

A log-extended Weibull regression model

A bathtub-shaped failure rate function is very useful in survival analysis and reliability studies. The well-known lifetime distributions do not have this property. For the first time, we propose a location-scale regression model based on the logarithm of an extended Weibull distribution which has the ability to deal with bathtub-shaped failure rate functions. We use the method of maximum likel...
